My Favorite Foodie Podcasts

Who doesn't love food?  Whether you enjoy it merely as sustenance or also a creative outlet, we all spend time eating and thinking about food.

I am in the kitchen every day making food for myself and our family.  Sometimes I'm trying a new recipe, sometimes I'm perfecting a favorite dish, and sometimes I'm just warming up leftovers from the fridge.  Food can be a source of frustration and joy.  My most recent experiments involving freshly ground flour have certainly tested my limits, but I think I'm finally getting it figured out.

When I get a bit of time to myself during the day, I like to listen to podcasts.  One of the kids will be napping, the other will be outside with Noah, and I am faced with a dirty kitchen, laundry that needs to be folded, or just some basic tidying of our house.  I'll turn on a podcast and get to work.

I have listened to some non-food podcasts in the past and I did find them enjoyable.  (Such as, Issues Etc., Over At Alicia's, and Homemaker Chic.)  But lately I have been finding comfort in food, so these foodies podcasts have been my go-to.

I began listening to The Splendid Table (hosted by Francis Lam) a couple years ago.  At the time I had been listening to Issues Etc. quite a lot and wanted a little more variety in my podcast choices.  I think I took to Google to find some foodie podcast recommendations.  I instantly loved Splendid Table.  They will interview prestigious chefs, talk about mom-and-pop restaurants, feature special ingredients or cuisines, and give simple home cooking advice.  It's a little bit of everything having to do with food and very interesting to listen to.

This podcast was created by Joy Manning and Marisa McClellan.  I have Marisa's cookbook Food In Jars and I have made basic tomato sauce, tomato jam, and three citrus marmalade following her recipes.  Their podcast episodes are about half an hour long.  I appreciate the short episode length because sometimes it is difficult to pause a podcast and come back to it later while trying to remember what was discussed previously.  Local Mouthful feels like you're eavesdropping on an easy going, pleasant conversation between two good friends who just love to talk about food.

This is a limited podcast series produced during the Covid lockdown and hosted by Samin Nosrat and Hrishikesh Hirway.  They answered home cooking questions from listeners and spoke with a special guest in each episode.  With only four episodes, this series is quick and enjoyable to listen to.  I could listen to Samin and Hrishikesh talk and joke together all day.  Their conversations were the perfect companion while cooking dinner.  I hope they will produce more episodes together!

For a little while after we started having kids I would sometimes not listen to anything at all when I was by myself and instead savored the silence of nap time.  Lately though I have enjoyed having something else to focus on besides diapers, quarantine, and the perpetual mountain of laundry that haunts my dreams.

What do you like to listen to?
